Connectivism – capabilities, tools, approaches

ORGANISE, SYNDICATE SEQUENCE and DISCOVER? 30 Sept

I have faced some hurdles in getting started which were about needing to think through the skills for this digital connected world. I think its going to be useful as a learner and educator to capture the processes.

1. Get a personal learning environment – SPACE where I can hang out and feel comfortable. Cyber learning space that reflects my learning needs. WordPress was recommended so check it out.

2. Use concept mapping to see how the ideas/resources/people were being connected. Find out its very labour intensive so check out about aggegrators. Sign into Google alerts

3. Get invite to post on colleagues blog- liked this approach to connecting

4. Finding a space to engage with others – from alerts checked out blogs that were posting on topics of interest. Decide to connect with a couple of people I didnt know.

5. Tracking posts and responses – felt postings were just a one way flow of information so checked out ways to track posts – found BLOPPY but didnt support some blogs, move on. Still working on this one.

6. Being challenged to find a comfortable space to converse- moodle forums ? Blogs? decided to join CCKO8 group for some focused activity.

7. Valdis has a good approach for getting started on twitter
1. Figure out what you want: learning, marketing yourself or something, getting to know new people, just mucking around? 2. If you know other people on Twitter, start following them. Then check out who they follow (we call this getting to know your friends’ friends). If their posts look interesting, follow them.  twitterlocal.net and see who in your town or neighborhood is on. Follow the ones you know or find interesting. 4. Use search.twitter.com and put in key words to find people interested in the same things you  Then I used TweetBeep.com to keep me posted when anyone says anything about those topics. 5. Think of people you have little connection with: people from different ethnic or racial backgrounds, people with different political views, urban people if your rural (and vice versa), etc.  Watch other people’s retweets or RTs (they put @person’s name) then if you like what that person says, click on their name, read some of their posts and start following them.
